The Ultimate Guide to Securing your Home.

HomeSecure sensor package

Are all home security packs the same?

Home security systems seems standard right? You set your alarm, someone breaks into your home, alarm sounds, and the guards arrive. Your home is protected, and this is all thanks to your security system. But how does it work? House alarm systems have come a long way in the past few years, and one of the biggest reasons for this is the advancement of sensors that react when someone enters your home.

Home Security companies protect homes in many ways, no company offers the same package. One company could only use motion sensors, one could offer a 4-sensor security package, while HomeSecure provides a 7-sensor package and if your home needs more or less, that is fine too!

There are various types of sensors, but we are here to give you the low down the HomeSecure way and why we recommend motion and contact sensors for the majority of Irish homes.

Where do the sensors go in my home?

According to the 2022 Irish Central Statistics, 33% of Burglars get into the home through a front door, so because of this an engineer will fit your front door and back door first! A contact sensor comes in two parts, a sensor and a magnet. Each part sits on either side of the door or window. When the door or window is opened the connection between the two is broken and this will set off the alarm once the system is armed.

With the HomeSecure contact sensor, the sensor and magnet don’t even need to be broken!  The sensor will detect shock and vibrations. So, if your door or window is pushed or shook, your alarm is triggered. Even if a door is unlocked, if the alarm is on, the system will go off. A lot of break-ins happen from just walking into through an unlocked door.

How do I protect inside my home?

Another type of sensor that is commonly used is a motion sensor. A motion sensor works by reacting to a movement in a certain area. You’re probably thinking, well I have a very energetic cat, or three dogs so will it not pick up their movement? Not necessarily, the motion sensors that HomeSecure use picks up objects that are over 20kg in weight and 50cm in height.  This is handy because it does reduces false alarms from small pets.

The ‘Stay Mode’ on the HomeSecure alarm also allows you to protect the inside of your home. It arms all perimeter sensors, allowing you to walk around your home and still be protected from potential break-ins.

We have covered where contact sensors go, so it is only fitting we map out where the best place to put motion sensors (don’t worry an engineer will go through this on the day too!). A motion sensor is usually placed in the hallway, top of your stairs or open spaces, mainly in those high traffic areas in your home! So if your alarm is set and movement is picked up in an area that includes a motion sensor, it will send an alert to a monitoring station.

The HomeSecure Package

In a HomeSecure system, a variation of contact sensors and motion sensors are used, this protects your perimeter and inside your home as well. You can arm and disarm the sensors at a particular time using your keypad. More commonly used is the HomeSecure App, the app will tell you what sensor is set, in what room and even if a window or door is open.

When you are thinking of the security of your home, sensors aren’t the first thing that jumps to mind. You just want to know if someone breaks into your home that an alarm will sound and the guards dispatched but it is always good to know how your home is being protected.
