The areas with the highest burglary rates revealed

2020 has been the year of statistics per capita, but breaking away from Covid cases for a moment, the Irish Independent have looked into the areas with the highest level of burglaries per 100,000 population. The figures were taken from the reported burglaries from last year.

Dublin takes the top 3 spots

Three different Dublin areas have the highest number of break-ins in the country.

1. The Dublin City Council area which runs from Crumlin to Coolock has the unfortunate title of the region with the highest number of break-ins per capita in the country with 636 per 100,000 population. That is almost double the national average of 341 per 100,000.

2. The South Dublin County Council area, which includes Clondalkin, Lucan and Tallaght was 2nd on the list. Tallaght is said to be home to some of the country’s most infamous burglary gangs.

3. The top three is rounded off by the Fingal area, which captures Swords and parts of the rural North Dublin which has 517 break-ins per 100,000 population.

4. Wicklow is the highest for burglaries outside of Dublin and the fourth highest overall with 498 break-ins per 100,000 population.

5. Next on the list is Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown, which includes the suburbs of Blackrock and Dundrum, which had a burglary rate of 478 per 100,000 population.

Kildare is the next highest, 6th highest overall in the country and second highest outside of Dublin with 443 burglaries per 100,000. Limerick is the highest outside of Leinster with their burglary rate which was above the average, with 416 per 100,000 people.

Mayo for Sam Safest county!

The area with the lowest number of reported was Mayo, which is no surprise as the West of the country is consistently the safest region in the annual CSO break-in statistics. Mayo recorded just 129 burglaries per 100,000 in the county.

Other high population areas like Cork and Kilkenny/Carlow had relatively low burglaries figures per 100,000 with 196 and 193 respectively per 100,000. Cork did have almost 900 break-ins last year, but because of its high population, the figure does appear small compared to the Dublin areas and the national average.

We also know from recent Garda statistics that November is historically the busiest month of the year for burglaries in Ireland, so it’s important to stay vigilant as thieves look to work under the cover of darkness.
