Homeowners advised to get smarter with where they hide presents

Unless you’re a last minute Christmas shopper, there’s a good chance your home is getting full of high value gifts. Homeowners are being warned not to leave presents in plain view of passersby and to avoid putting them under your tree until the last minute. Seeing a big pile of gifts in your home, could entice an opportunistic burglar or may make him return to your home when you’re not there. It’s advised you find alternative places to store your presents and to keep them out of sight of people walking by.

Aviva recently surveyed over 2,000 people and found that aside from the Christmas tree, the most popular hiding place for presents was in cupboards / drawers (29%) with the spare bedroom as next most popular spot (26%).

Although it’s good to have out of the box hiding spots Aviva warned homeowners to check their cover, as not all insurance companies would cover theft from sheds or garages. Your car insurance policy would also have a different limit on the items taken compared to home contents cover.

To help to deter burglars from entering your home this Christmas period, we recommend the following:

  1. Always set you’re on, whether you’re home or out and about
  2. Check your app to see if you set your system
  3. Double check doors and windows are locked
  4. Leave a light on in the evening if you’re not home
  5. Don’t leave Christmas gifts in plain sight for passersby
